program Description

Elemental @ Westminster brings the transformative power of music directly into the classroom, providing standards-based, in-school core music classes to students in grades TK–5 at Los Angeles Unified School District’s Westminster Avenue Elementary School.

Elemental @ Westminster guides students to understand music as a means to build community and self-awareness. In weekly classes, students explore how music is uniquely constructed and celebrated in varying cultures and historical moments. Elemental Music teaches fundamental skills from both verbal and written music traditions, including singing, playing rhythm instruments, and writing lyrics. Students perform twice a year as a part of the school’s Winter Holiday and Black History Month concerts.

At Elemental Music, we believe that every child deserves access to high-quality music education. By providing in-school core music classes to the entire student body of Westminster, we strive to create a learning community where every student is enthusiastically invited to engage their inner musician.

Funding for these classes comes from individual donations as well as the Rose Hills Foundation and Friends of Westminster.

Elemental Music provides my students an opportunity to tap into their artistic potential that they may otherwise never have the chance to discover. I enjoy the cultural responsiveness of the lessons, where we learn about musical artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds. I also appreciate the opportunities for my students to practice with a multitude of instruments. Elemental Music is an amazing educational experience.
